April is National Poetry Month

I just heard this 11 days into the month, but it’s time to celebrate it nevertheless. When back on my personal computer, I will dig up some writings from my more sensitive days in high school and college to share with you all during the rest of this month. Anyone have any poems they’d like to share, written by you or a favorite author?

A coming of age poem, in homage to A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin.

    Winter is Coming

I am the sword in the darkness… the watcher on the walls…the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. – Vow of the Night’s Watch George RR Martin A Song of Ice and Fire

    Crest hung high, solid oak
    a window through stone.
    Truth that is cold, dark,
    on heated castle walls.

    Childhood melts away, escaping
    the frozen fortress. A bastard
    son, his bastard sword, stand
    defending a shield of ice.

A second son, a bigger battle,
    leading his wards to war.
    A prim, proper princess
    married and moved away.

    A little crippled boy, world’s
    weight stronger than adolescent
    armor. Youngest daughter, needle
    work, carrying her brother’s sword.

    Wings of children,
    winds of change.
    Winter is Here.
